When Paranoids Collide they Blow the Whistle on Tea Kettles

Posted on 13:04 by Unknown
Customs agents in Russia found tea kettles and irons bugged with tiny Spyware chips that exploit WiFi connections, reports a local news outlet coming out of St. Petersburg.

According to Gizmodo, the microchips are capable of spreading spam and malware to WiFi-enabled devices within 200 meters.  Specific details of the dodgy shipments remain shady...

Simon Sharwood of The Register reports that it is indeed possible to build a spambot small enough to fit inside of a kettle, as the necessary components are small and cheap enough...

One question remains unanswered, however: why would China send bugged tea kettles to spy on the ordinary tea-drinkers of Russia?

Gizmodo suggests that perhaps local authorities were mistaken about their findings, pointing out that WiFi tea kettles already exist.

Business Insider speculates that if the kettles are bugged, it could very well be a test for larger operations to plant such microchips.

We'll let you weave your own intricate conspiracy theory. (more)

Hey, kids! Want a smart watch? All right. Who said "house arrest ankle bracelet"?!?!

Posted on 12:59 by Unknown
AT&T announced a new smart device that goes on the wrist today, but it’s not the Galaxy Gear. This is the Filip, a pseudo-smartwatch for kids that parents can use to keep tabs on their offspring with an unparalleled level of accuracy. This device acts as a phone, GPS tracker, and a panic button all in one somewhat awkward package.

The Filip plugs into an iOS or Android app that allows parents to set five trusted numbers that the watch can place calls to. The announcement glosses over the phone call functionality, but it appears to be entirely speakerphone-based. The app is also used to pull locations from the watch in real time, send direct SMS, and set up “Safe Zones.” A Safe Zone is basically a geo-fence that the watch is supposed to stay inside of. If it leaves the Safe Zone, an alert will be pushed to the smartphone app. This is truly helicopter parenting gone high-tech...

There are only two buttons on the Filip, one of which is a big red panic button. When it’s held for three seconds, the device will go into emergency mode and start ambient sound recording. It also sends text messages to all five trusted numbers and places a call to the first number in the list. False alarms will be quite the affair.

AT&T will be the exclusive network provider for the Filip, but no pricing has been announced. The closest thing to a release date is “in the coming months.” (more)

Is Your Cell Phone Talking to Your Carrier, or Behind Your Back to a Rogue?

Posted on 07:28 by Unknown
It's not easy to tell, but very important if you want to have a confidential conversation.

What is a rogue or IMSI catcher?

"An IMSI catcher is essentially a false mobile tower acting between the target mobile phone(s) and the service providers real towers. As such it is considered a Man In the Middle (MITM) attack. It is used as an eavesdropping device used for interception and tracking of cellular phones and usually is undetectable for the users of mobile phones. Such a virtual base transceiver station (VBTS) is a device for identifying the International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) of a nearby GSM mobile phone and intercepting its calls." (more)

Folks with a Cryptophone know...

"Each week an increasing number of Cryptophone customers are becoming aware of disturbing, yet unfortunately not surprising changes to the cellular network in their area.

This screenshot sent in by a customer shows the Cryptophone 500 alerting them to changes in the mobile network. In this case standard network encryption has been turned off. This is often an indication that a rogue base station or “IMSI Catcher” is active in the area.

While this knowledge would be of great to concern to most people, Cryptophone users can rest easy knowing that even in the presence of an ‘active’ attack’s like this, their communications are still completely secure." (more) (more)

Think the problem is theoretical?
"Recently leaked brochures advertising next generation spy devices give outsiders a glimpse into the high-tech world of government surveillance. And one of the most tantalizing of the must-have gizmos available from a company called GammaGroup is a body-worn device that surreptitiously captures the unique identifier used by cell phones." (more)

"Hacker intercepts phone calls with homebuilt $1,500 IMSI catcher, claims GSM is beyond repair" (more)

"Septier IMSI Catcher (SIC) has been designed as a tactical solution intended to extract GSM entities. Based on the Septier GUARDIAN infrastructure, Septier IMSI Catcher provides its users with the capability of extracting IMSI and IMEI of GSM Mobile Stations (MS) that are active in the system's effective range.

Septier IMSI Catcher is the perfect solution for both extracting identities from MS in its area of coverage (when these identities are previously unknown) and detecting the presence of known cell phones in the area, notifying the system user about those phones. Septier IMSI Catcher can be equipped with an add-on 3G module that allows identity extraction for 3G cell phones as well. It has several configurations that allow meeting the specific requirements of every operation and are suitable for various working conditions." (more)

Afraid of Getting a Virus from a Public Recharging Station?

Posted on 09:28 by Unknown
For every scare, there is an inventor with an answer...
via int3.cc...
Have you ever plugged your phone into a strange USB port because you really needed a charge and thought: "Gee who could be stealing my data?." We all have needs and sometimes you just need to charge your phone. "Any port in a storm." as the saying goes. Well now you can be a bit safer. "USB Condoms" prevent accidental data exchange when your device is plugged in to another device with a USB cable. USB Condoms achieve this by cutting off the data pins in the USB cable and allowing only the power pins to connect through. Thus, these "USB Condoms" prevent attacks like "juice jacking".

Use USB-Condoms to:
* Charge your phone on your work computer without worrying...
* Use charging stations in public without worrying...

If you're going to run around plugging your phone into strange USB ports, at least be safe about it. ;-) (more)

School v. Students - Monitoring Social Media for Anti-Social Behavior

Posted on 07:42 by Unknown
Authorities in California are now snooping on school students’ social media postings to catch law-breaking, bullying and other harmful activities. But parents worry the move is yet another example of Big Brother prying into ordinary Americans’ lives.

Glendale Unified School District, the third-largest in Los Angeles County, has paid Geo Listening Company over $40,000 to follow its students on social media networks. The stated aim is to prevent law-breaking, bullying and doing harm to themselves and others.

Under the scheme, the online activities of Glendale’s 13,000 middle-school and high-school students are closely monitored. (more)

The Newest Eavesdropping Gadget for PIs and Spies - Also a Security & Safety Tool

Posted on 06:55 by Unknown
When people around you put on headphones or earbuds you begin to speak freely. Big mistake. You may have been lulled into a false sense of security by an eavesdropper using The Fuser.
"The Fuser increases your awareness of the natural sounds around you using its built-in microphone to “mix” the music in your headphones with the outside world, allowing you to enjoy your music while still hearing yourself and others around you talk, laugh, work, play.*

Listen to music at work and still engage with co-workers. Take a road trip and not ignore others in the car. Relax at the beach with your music and still hear the waves crash… The possibilities are endless. (Oh, and by the way) *Fuser can also be used without a music device as a powerful hearing aid." (more)

P.S. This is also an excellent safety device for when you are walking, jogging, bicycling, or in any other situation where you need to be alert to your surroundings.

Smartphone Spy Lens

Posted on 06:59 by Unknown
Why mention this?
Our PI friends need to know, and so you will know what you're up against.

"The Smartphone Spy Lens is a tiny gizmo you attach to your phone to take photos at a 90° angle. You can slyly hold your phone in texting position, while photoing straight ahead!

Periscope around a corner. Snap candid shots of your camera-shy kids. Take a photo of your dinner plate without having to climb up on the table.

Its high quality glass and mirrored interior ensures no photo quality is lost. Attach the included metal ring around your phone's lens and the Spy Lens magnetizes securely onto it.

Since it twists 360° you'll have all the advantages of a camera with a swivel screen. Hold it high and still see what you're shooting. Hold it low without dropping into an army crawl to set your focus.

With the Spy Lens in place you can lay your phone down and still shoot straight ahead. Turning any surface into an impromptu tripod for self ports, group pix and steady videoing." (more)

Spybusters Tip # 723 - Be Smart - Use a Dumb Phone to Thwart Spyware

Posted on 12:44 by Unknown
Sometimes you just need a dumb phone that can't spy on you.
inKlien Global's tiny phone
6.5mm Ultra Thin AIEK M3 Cool Card Cell Phone

One that can't hold spyware.
One that can't GPS track you.
One that can't bite you with Bluetooth.

Dumb phones are not always easy to find.

Your local cell phone store wants you to buy smartphones with data plans. Your significant other isn't going to gift you a dumb phone. (A smartphone, maybe, but don't trust it.)

If you are in the market for a spybusting phone, or just a secret second phone, try looking at these...

inKlien Global "The world slimmest card size phone." (turn off Bluetooth)
johnsphones.com "The world's most basic cell phone."
Kyocera Marbl K127  (Virgin Mobile) Cellular Phone
Motorola W260g  Prepaid Phone (Tracfone)
Motorola C139  Prepaid Phone (Tracfone)

More Spybusters Tips:
• If you suspect your phone is spying on you, don't completely stop using it until you can collect evidence to prove your case.
• Pick up a cheap, dumb, unblocked secret phone.
-- Don't give out the number.

-- Don't tell anyone you have it.
-- Use a pre-paid SIM card.
-- Use it for very confidential calls only, Let a little information leak via your smartphone. You don't want to tip off your spy that you have gone dark.
-- Completely turn off your smartphone when using your secret phone.
• Block your phone number from being sent. Press *67 before entering the number you want to call. Remember, calls to toll-free numbers like 700, 800, and 900 numbers (and their variants) can not be blocked.
• Rather text than phone? Return to those thrilling days of yesteryear... rent a pager.

Baby Cam Hackers Can See You, Hear You, and Talk to You... and Your Kids

Posted on 07:16 by Unknown
A hacker was able to shout abuse at a two-year-old child by exploiting a vulnerability in a camera advertised as an ideal "baby monitor".

ABC News revealed how a couple in Houston, Texas, heard a voice saying lewd comments coming from the camera, made by manufacturer Foscam.

Get Adobe Flash player
Vulnerabilities in Foscam products were exposed in April, and the company issued an emergency fix.

Foscam said it was unable to provide a statement at this time.

However, a UK-based reseller told the BBC it would contact its entire customer database to remind them "the importance in setting a password to their cameras".

The spokesman added that it would be urging Foscam's head office - based in Shenzhen, China - to send out a memo to all its resellers suggesting they too contact their customers.

The BBC has found evidence of hackers sharing information on how to access insecure Foscam cameras via several widely-used forums. Using specialist search engines, people can narrow their results by location...

Foscam is not the only company to find itself the target of hackers. Last year, camera company Trendnet had to rush out an update to fix a security hole that left thousands of cameras exposed. (more)

This is not a new problem. Manufacturers have been slow to respond. (Security Scrapbook warnings from 2/12 and 7/13). Why?

Espionage Idea: Imagine your country is the top manufacturer of surveillance cameras. You build in a back-door capability to monitor each one, and hope no one notices. Salt the Earth with your product. Target the units placed in sensitive areas. Wow, what power! And, then some hackers blow it for you. Damn hackers.

Spy Cameras, Secret Audio Help Fight Movie Piracy

Posted on 16:06 by Unknown
If all the sounds of the summer blockbuster "Man of Steel" were stripped away ...a light humming would still be heard. The barely audible noise is an audio watermark...

Designed by engineers at San Diego company Verance Corp., the watermark is a unique signal to Blu-ray disc players that the movie being watched was illegally recorded at a movie theater. After 20 minutes of playtime, the disc player shuts the movie down and offers the viewer the chance to continue watching—by paying for the movie through legitimate sources like Amazon.com Inc. and Netflix Inc.

...a San Diego startup, PirateEye, believes they can combat piracy using a vastly different technology.

The PirateEve camera, in theaters, can spot people recording a movie.

It installs cameras above theater screens that can detect recording devices in the audience and then send pictures of offenders to theater security.

PirateEye's camera-spotting technology was adapted from a military application that placed sensors under combat helicopters to scan the ground below for reflections from scopes on sniper rifles.

Hollywood studios provided several million dollars in investment for the company, which has also been funded by private investors. (more)

Silent Circle Silenced

Posted on 02:29 by Unknown
...as predicted here and here and here...
Two major secure e-mail service providers on Thursday took the extraordinary step of shutting down service.

A Texas-based company called Lavabit, which was reportedly used by Edward J. Snowden, announced its suspension Thursday afternoon, citing concerns about secret government court orders.

By evening, Silent Circle, a Maryland-based firm that counts heads of state among its customers, said it was following Lavabit’s lead and shutting its e-mail service as a protective measure.

Taken together, the closures signal that e-mails, even if they are encrypted, can be accessed by government authorities and that the only way to prevent turning over the data is to obliterate the servers that the data sits on.

Mike Janke, Silent Circle’s chief executive, said in a telephone interview late Thursday that his company had destroyed its server. “Gone. Can’t get it back. Nobody can,” he said. “We thought it was better to take flak from customers than be forced to turn it over.”

The company, in a blog post dated Friday, Aug. 9, said it had taken the extreme measure even though it had not received a search order from the government. (more)

Mystery Car Thefts - Solved

Posted on 17:13 by Unknown
Remember this post from June?
---
The news media is overflowing with reports of "High Tech" car burglars. They appear to be opening locked cars while holding a "black box" which "has police all over the nation stumped as to how it works."

Here, at the Spybusters Countermeasures Compound, we believe the black box is nothing more than a radio signal jammer.

The spybusters tracked down the tool they probably used to pull off the heists...

Bremont Codebreaker Crypto Watch Turns Position of Earth into a Usable Measurement

Posted on 09:21 by Unknown
The Bremont Codebreaker is a limited edition chronograph that uses original artifacts from the famous cryptographic facility to commemorate British code breaking efforts during the Second World War.

Bletchley Park was one of the best kept secrets of the Second World War and remained so for decades after until the story was made public in 1974. The ancient estate with its Victorian mansion was the headquarters for the Government Code and Cipher School (GC&CS), where 9,000 scientists, mathematicians and others were tasked with decrypting enemy ciphers from the German Enigma and Lorenz machines. It was where Alan Turing laid the foundations for modern computer science and artificial intelligence and was the birthplace of Colossus, the world’s first programmable electronic computer.

The efforts of the team at Bletchley Park were perhaps the greatest single strategic advantage of the Allies and may have shortened the war by two years. The Codebreaker is meant to not only act as a commemoration piece, but also a physical container of some of that story. According to Bremont, the Codebreaker was Inspired by a classic 1940’s officers watch and that 240 steel Codebreaker watches will be created along with 50 rose gold watches. Each numbered watch has a flyback Chronograph GMT automatic movement and is made from materials directly related to the code breaking efforts. (more)

Moto X - The Creepy Boyfriend You Never Knew You Wanted

Posted on 06:46 by Unknown
Imagine a spy with access to a second-by-second record of your location and all of your electronic communications—and which is also the world’s most sophisticated superbrain, capable of mining all that information, big data-style, for unexpected connections...

...the Moto X... essentially, it’s the world’s most sophisticated cluster of sensors you can wear on your person, and it’s going to know every single thing you do, whether it’s driving, sleeping or taking a walk around the block. Google is betting that you will love your pocket Stasi so much you’ll never want to be without it—and Google is right...

For example, the phone knows how fast you’re traveling, so it might not let you text while driving. And it has enough contextual information to know not only whether or not you just took it out of your pocket, but also why you just took it out of your pocket, so it can immediately fire up the camera app when you want to take a picture...

It’s the fact that Google’s forthcoming phone will start to know that “why”—the causal connections that stitch together our actions and desires—that is nothing short of astonishing...
Normal smartphones are limited in their ability to spy on you because their makers never anticipated that this is a thing you’d want to do. (more)
